Transverse Myelitis is a rare inflammatory disorder affecting the spinal cord. Essentially, the body attacks the spinal cord. The resulting inflammation can cause catastrophic damage. There is no link to heredity, gender or race. There is currently no cure for this disorder and the only remedy is to treat the symptoms. It occurs at a rate of between 1 and 8 new cases per million people per year. This translates into approximately 1,400 new cases each year in the United States.
